What is the wp-config.php file?

The Wordpress wp-config.php configuration file

wp-config.php is a file located in the root directory (public_html) of a Wordpress site. It contains all the configuration details of the website. These include the database name, host, username and password.

When you download WordPress, the wp-config.php file is not yet included. You must provide some information during the installation process for WordPress to create a wp-config.php file.

If you create a new wp-config.php file, WordPress includes a template in the root folder, already containing the necessary codes. Improper configuration of this file can cause major problems on a website. Most website owners never venture to modify it.

If necessary, you can locate the wp-config.php file via an FTP client or the cPanel File Manager. You will simply find it in the public_html root folder of your site.
