What is CIRA ?
Geographic domain names such as . ca or .us does not fall under the responsibility ICANN but are managed by local entities, responsible for their management and supervision. In Canada, this local authority is called CIRA in English (and ACEI in French).
From 1988 to 2000, the University of British Columbia managed and registered domains using the .ca extension. With the expansion of the Internet, this task became too important and demanding to remain the responsibility of a single university.
Discussions between the various players in the Canadian digital world led to the creation of the Canadian Internet Registration Authority.
It is a not-for-profit corporation, responsible for managing the registry of the national first-level domain (the TLD .ca).
Today, CIRA manages more than 3 million domain names registered with the .ca extension.
