# How to restore the system files of a Wordpress website?

## Restore WordPress system files via cPanel File Manager

Step 1 - Preparation

First, you need to create a new backup of your website. You can do this by creating a backup using cPanel or by logging in via FTP and downloading the current version of the site.   

Step 2 - WordPress "Clean"

Then you need to go to [WordPress.org](https://wordpress.org/) and download the archive with a clean (no plugins and themes) WordPress.

You can find both the latest version and the oldest - make sure you download the same version you had!

You must then select the directory where you want to download the [CMS](https://help.ex2.com/en/article/what-is-a-content-management-system-or-cms-1c48kdh/?bust=1784052067814) and wait for the procedure to be completed.

### Copy WordPress files to hosting

1. [Log in to your cPanel](https://help.ex2.com/en/article/comment-me-connecter-a-mon-compte-cpanel-pqz10p/?bust=1676032517306).

2. In the Files section, click the **File Manager** icon.

Then, you need to copy all the files and folders from the pure WordPress folder to the public_html folder (or another folder you used to install WordPress). 

Click Load:

Select the files and folders of the clear WordPress. When asked, choose Replace:

Once the download process is complete, you can check your website in incognito mode of your browser - it should work and your plugins, themes and content will be saved!
